Introduction to S1000D (S1)

This course offers an introduction to the main principles and terminology of S1000D

The course covers the history and governance of the S1000D committees, before focusing on the specification itself. We will look at the principles behind the use of data modules (DM), how information is managed and delivered and, most importantly, the governance and integrity of data.

This is a seminar style course, led by a tutor, with time for questions and interaction

1 day classroom, or

What does the course cover?

This course gives a high-level understanding of S1000D including:

  • History S1000D
  • Structure and governance of S1000D governing body
  • What is S1000D?
  • Understanding and using the Specification
  • The building blocks of S1000D: the DM, DM types, DM codification
  • Understanding the lifecycle and governance of data including S1000D’s verification status
  • Software requirements for working in S1000D: Common Source Database (CSDB), authoring tools, publishing and delivery tools, checking tools
  • Business Rules, who writes them, how they affect you, and their mechanisms including BREX.
  • Considerations on converting data

Introduction to structured authoring (S2)

This course offers an introduction to structured authoring using XML or SGML

Many technical authoring applications require the use of structured language – ie XML or SGML. This may be standards-based such as S1000D or ATA iSpec 2200, or a more open standard such as a DITA instance.

This is a hands-on course, led by a tutor, with practice examples for students to undertake

Technical authors and technical publications team leaders that need to use a structured language

How long is the course?

1 half-day session on-line

What does the course cover?

This course gives a solid foundation in structured languages:

  • What are SGML and XML
  • Benefits of using structured language
  • Understanding taxonomy
  • Introducing mark-up: tags and elements
  • Parent, peer and child elements, and element hierarchy
  • Introducing the schema and document type definition (DTD)
  • Attributes, their use and construction
  • Understanding ‘the instance’
  • Declaring elements and attributes
  • Using references and entities (graphics)
  • The change in mindset of structured authoring – benefits and pitfalls

S1000D for technical authors (S3)

This course offers in-depth training to provide an author the skills and knowledge necessary to edit content in S1000D

Technical authors, technical publication team leaders

Who is this course for?

The course covers authoring in SGML and XML, working through detailed examples of Descriptive and Procedural data modules (DMs). Authors will produce content according to the latest Issue of S1000D, whilst the tutor will discuss differences from earlier versions.

This is a hands-on course, led by a tutor, with practice examples for students to undertake

Pre-requisites

Attendees must:

  • Be competent using structured languages or first complete our Introduction to structured authoring (S2) course
  • Be familiar with the concepts and terminology of S1000D or first complete our Introduction to S1000D (S1) course
  • Have a suitable editing tool capable of opening and editing SGML or XML files from S1000D. We can offer advice and trial licences to support this requirement

How long is the course?

2 days classroom, or
4 half-day sessions on-line

What does the course cover?

Everything needed to begin authoring in S1000D, including:

  • The building blocks of S1000D, including DM types, DM codification, and the standard numbering system (SNS)
  • Authoring S1000D DMs using SGML and XML including element tags and attribute values
  • The identification and status (ID&Status) section and the importance of this hidden metadata in maintaining DMs in a project
  • S1000D’s main element types and the building blocks of DM content in different DM types
  • Use of the S1000D attribute system and project-configured variables
  • Output automation through the tagging of data including Highlights, Index, Front matter generation
  • Applicability tagging and effects
  • Change marking
  • Use of referenced material eg Common Repository DMs
  • The Data Module Requirements List (DMRL), Data Dispatch Note (DDN) and Publication Module (PM)
  • Working with and embedding supporting media, and the Information Control Number (ICN)
  • Awareness of S1000D tools including CSDBs, BREX and schema checking tools, and authoring tools
  • Understanding the lifecycle and governance of data including S1000D’s verification status
  • Business Rules, who writes them, how they affect you, and their mechanisms including BREX.
  • Preparing data for delivery
